In recent years, right-wing populists have been mobilizing against Islam. In 2008, a group calling itself Pro-Cologne tried to block the construction of a new mosque in the western German city. The move failed, but the political group has grown and hopes for success in upcoming state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia.

What could be more European than a castle? The Continent is dotted with them, often menacingly perched on forested hilltops overlooking rivers or ancient trading routes — important bastions necessary for the defense of what developed into Europe’s long and rich cultural tradition.

These days, of course, European castles tend to be little more than bucolic tourist attractions. But it is perhaps no accident that a small palace in western Germany’s former industrial heart has been chosen to host a convention ostensibly aimed at defending European culture. The castle in question is the centuries-old Horst Palace, a Renaissance structure in the Ruhr Valley city of Gelsenkirchen. The gathering is called, pointedly, the Anti-Minaret Conference.

This Saturday, politicians representing right-wing conservative parties from across Europe will descend on the Horst Palace to discuss the dangers of Islam. Delegates from the Belgian nationalists Vlaams Belang will be there as will politicians from Geert Wilders’s Dutch Party for Freedom, Pia Kjaersgaard’s Danish People’s Party and the Front National of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Others from Sweden, Austria and Eastern Europe are also on the invite list.

‘Symbols of Radical Islam’

The hosts are a relatively new group of German right-wing conservatives called Pro-NRW (an abbreviation of the German state North Rhine-Westphalia) and the goal of the conference is clear: to follow in Switzerland’s footsteps and ban minarets across Europe. And they want to use a provision of the European Union’s new Lisbon Treaty to do it.

“I don’t think that minarets are part of our heritage,” conference attendee Filip Dewinter, floor leader for Vlaams Belang in the Flemish parliament, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. “They are symbols of radical Islam. The question is whether Islam is a religion like Protestantism and Catholicism and for me it is not. It is a political system, it is a way of life and it is one that is not compatible with ours.”

Pro-NRW and the other right-wing parties were galvanized when Swiss voters last November passed a ban on the construction of new minarets in the country. Since then, the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which launched the referendum, have become the darlings of the European right. Indeed, the SVP has loaned their controversial campaign poster, which depicts missile-like minarets jutting out of a Swiss flag behind an ominous, niqab-wearing Muslim woman, to Pro-NRW for its campaign in Germany. And anti-minaret movements on the Swiss model have sprung up around Europe.

Barack Obama is the best thing that has happened to America in the last 100 years. Truly, he is the savior of America’s future. He is the best thing ever.

Despite the fact that he has some of the lowest approval ratings among recent presidents, history will see Barack Obama as the source of America’s resurrection. Barack Obama has plunged the country into levels of debt that we could not have previously imagined; his efforts to nationalize health care have been met with fierce resistance nationwide; TARP bailouts and stimulus spending have shown little positive effect on the national economy; unemployment is unacceptably high and looks to remain that way for most of a decade; legacy entitlement programs have ballooned to unsustainable levels, and there is a seething anger in the populace.

That’s why Barack Obama is such a good thing for America.

Obama is the symbol of a creeping liberalism that has infected our society like a cancer for the last 100 years. Just as Hitler is the face of fascism, Obama will go down in history as the face of unchecked liberalism. The cancer metastasized to the point where it could no longer be ignored.

Average Americans who have quietly gone about their lives, earning a paycheck, contributing to their favorite charities, going to high school football games on Friday night, spending their weekends at the beach or on hunting trips — they’ve gotten off the fence. They’ve woken up. There is a level of political activism in this country that we haven’t seen since the American Revolution, and Barack Obama has been the catalyst that has sparked a restructuring of the American political and social consciousness.

Think of the crap we’ve slowly learned to tolerate over the past 50 years as liberalism sought to re-structure the America that was the symbol of freedom and liberty to all the people of the world. Immigration laws were ignored on the basis of compassion. Welfare policies encouraged irresponsibility, the fracturing of families, and a cycle of generations of dependency. Debt was regarded as a tonic to lubricate the economy. Our children left school having been taught that they are exceptional and special, while great numbers of them cannot perform basic functions of mathematics and literacy. Legislators decided that people could not be trusted to defend their own homes, and stripped citizens of their rights to own firearms. Productive members of society have been penalized with a heavy burden of taxes in order to support legions of do-nothings who loll around, reveling in their addictions, obesity, indolence, ignorance and “disabilities.” Criminals have been arrested and re-arrested, coddled and set free to pillage the citizenry yet again. Lawyers routinely extort fortunes from doctors, contractors and business people with dubious torts.

We slowly learned to tolerate these outrages, shaking our heads in disbelief, and we went on with our lives.

But Barack Obama has ripped the lid off a seething cauldron of dissatisfaction and unrest.

Indeed, this was the Marx’s dream.

When Marx failed to get workers of the world to unite, a splinter group known as the Frankfurt School came to America and imbued its cultural “values” into the mainstream fabric of America, forever perverting the culture with a social technology known as critical theory. Now, violence, wanton sex, gay perverts, women’s libbers, anti-establishment BabyBoomers and androgyny are all you see on TV, the movies and in the secular mass media.

Supposing you work for a government agency that has just improved its anti-bank-robbery program.

Could you write a press release about it without using the words “bank” or “robber”? Well, USCIS has pulled off a comparable feat visa-a-vis the E-Verify program, whose sole purpose in life is preventing illegal aliens from getting jobs.

The press release in question, entitled “DHS Unveils Initiatives To Enhance E-Verify,” manages to run for more than a page without mentioning the words “illegal alien,” “undocumented worker,” or even the fundamental purpose of the program.

It is a real accomplishment.

E-Verify is a useful, massive data-base, electronic program which gives employers a chance to compare data on people they have just hired with USCIS and Social Security files. If the worker’s data does not jibe with the government files, and if he or she cannot subsequently resolve any problems found, then the employer may fire the worker. The point is to keep illegal aliens from being hired.

What DHS has done is to work out an arrangement with the Department of Justice to zap employers who misuse the E-Verify program, to provide a telephone system for workers whose data does not immediately match the government data, and to train people, in English and Spanish, to identify misuses of the system.

Useful measures, to be sure, but none are designed to make it tougher for illegal aliens to get jobs. Do the measures “enhance” the program or do they simply make it harder to misuse? Not that there is any real evidence that misuse is much of a problem.

The USCIS press release writers manage to get close to the neighborhood of the purpose of the program when they speak of helping “employers across the country maintain a legal workforce,” and when they talk of the “Department’s efforts to protect critical employment opportunities.”

But there are no mentions of enforcing the immigration law, or the crass objective of sorting out illegal workers from legal ones.

Monash University population expert Dr Bob Birrell said the huge influx of people with few or no English skills had created social problems in suburbs such as Dandenong, Sunshine and Broadmeadows.

“This is not a pretty picture,” he said.

“Social divisions are becoming more obvious and geographically concentrated (and certain areas) are being overlain by an ethnic identification.”

Dr Birrell made the explosive comments in an article for the Centre of Independent Studies magazine Policy.

In a plea to the Rudd Government to slash the current migrant intake of 180,000 a year, Dr Birrell warned that the predicted population of 36 million by 2050 would be a disaster for urban living and the environment.

“One would have to wander deaf, dumb and blind through Australian capital cities to not notice how urban congestion has already reduced the quality of life,” he said.

“Why are Labor elites apparently unmoved by these concerns?”

“The Obama administration plans to overhaul how it’s tackling the foreclosure crisis, in part by requiring lenders to temporarily slash or eliminate monthly mortgage payments for many borrowers who are unemployed, senior officials said Thursday.

Banks and other lenders would have to reduce the payments to no more than 31 percent of a borrower’s income, which would typically be their unemployment insurance, for up to six months. In some cases, administration officials said, a lender could allow a borrower to make no payments at all.

The new push, which the White House is scheduled to announce Friday, takes direct aim at the major cause of the current wave of foreclosures: the spike in unemployment. While the initial mortgage crisis that erupted three years ago resulted from millions of risky home loans that went bad, more recent defaults reflect the country’s economic downturn and the inability of jobless borrowers to keep paying.”

Homeland Security Assistant Inspector General Frank Deffer told the House’s Immigration Subcommittee on Tuesday that the agency is not prepared for a mass amnesty, and Congress should consider this if and when they take up comprehensive immigration reform. Deffer called a mass amnesty “the mother of all backlogs.”

Deffer further told Congress that Immigration and Customs Services is in the process of converting from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system and offering citizenship to 11 million illegal aliens is a bad idea.

“Clearly to us the systems could not handle it now,” Deffer said during his testimony. “It’s going to take a few years, so it’s something for Congress to consider that, when they implement this, they don’t have a date too soon.”

Pres. Obama said in a video message during Sunday’s March for America rally on the National Mall that he will push for a bipartisan mass amnesty bill before the end of the year. In response to Deffer’s statements, USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas said that the agency will be prepared for a mass amnesty, but expects resources to make it happen.

A poster from the Arab Complete Count Committee includes the phrase “Yalla Count! (Yalla is an Arab expression for “Come on”) … “Check it right, you ain’t white!” to remind Arab Americans to be counted in the census.

With thousands of households receiving U.S. census forms in the mail every day now, local Arab Americans say they’re thrilled that their “Check it right, you ain’t white!” campaign is garnering national attention.

The Arab Complete Count Committee of Orange County launched the campaign earlier this year to encourage those with Arab ethnicity – including those from places such as Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine – to check “other” when asked what race they are on census forms, and to fill in “Arab” or their specific country of origin.

Traditionally, Arabs have been counted as “white.”

So the committee came up with the playful phrase to get a serious message out to a highly underrepresented community.

After the Register ran a story on the campaign last month, members of the Orange County committee were contacted by reporters from around the country.

Newsweek’s Web site ran a homepage story on the campaign and a segment ran on National Public Radio.

“This was the whole point of the campaign, to get the word out,” said Rashad Al-Dabbagh, a committee member from Anaheim and a partnership specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau. “We don’t want this work to stop here; we want it to be heard across the nation.”
